The Mykhailo Starytsky Theatre is Khmelnytskyi's main drama stage. The company's history began in 1931, when the Regional Ukrainian State Drama Theatre was created in Novocherkassk for Ukrainians of the Kuban and the North Caucasus; in 1933 the core troupe was moved to Ukraine. Its first productions of works by Lope de Vega, Hulak-Artemovsky, Kotliarevsky, Starytsky and Kropyvnytsky set a course towards quality drama that the theatre still follows. Today the repertoire includes Ukrainian classics, musical shows, comedies and contemporary plays. The theatre building on Soborna Street is one of the notable landmarks of the centre, and tickets can be bought online.
