Taras Shevchenko Square, long called the City Garden by locals, is one of the most picturesque spots in the centre, bounded by Proskurivska, Volodymyrska, Heroiv Maidanu and Hrushevskoho streets. An oak grove once stood here on the outskirts of Ploskyriv; under the 1824 town plan part of the oaks were cut down to create the Grain Market Square, where fairs were held every week. Later the square was turned into a green garden, which is now protected as a local landmark of landscape art. It features a monument to Taras Shevchenko, fountains and a playground, and the literary museum stands opposite.
