About the community

Khmelnytskyi City Hromada was formed in 2020 around the regional centre, the city of Khmelnytskyi, which was joined by the settlement of Bohdanivtsi and 23 villages of the former Kopystyn, Oleshyn, Sharovechka, Bohdanivtsi, Davydkivtsi and Vodychky communities and councils. The city is first mentioned in 1431 as Ploskyriv, a settlement where the Ploska river flows into the Southern Bug, with its own castle guarding the crossing. It received Magdeburg rights in 1566, became Proskuriv at the end of the 18th century and has carried the name of Bohdan Khmelnytskyi since 1954. At the turn of the 20th century Proskuriv grew into a busy trading hub of Podillia: the railway, the grain trade and exports of poultry and eggs to Europe left behind blocks of merchant houses, pharmacies and banks along today's Proskurivska street. In Soviet times the city built transformers, radio equipment and capacitors, and later became one of the country's largest clothing markets. Today visitors can enjoy pedestrian Proskurivska street, the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Theotokos, St Anne's church, the city history museum and the museum-studio of photographic art, the regional philharmonic and theatres, Chekman Park, Youth Park, the Podillia arboretum and the Southern Bug embankment with Love Island, passed by excursion boats. The tourist information centre runs themed walks through old Proskuriv, while the villages of the community offer ponds, meadows and Bug floodplains for quiet recreation.
