Samar's central square underwent its first comprehensive reconstruction in 2017–2018. It was repaved and given lighting, irrigation, benches and a Wi-Fi zone, and planted with lawns, more than 1,500 shrubs and about 200 trees, including Japanese cherries, plane trees, spruces and ornamental plums. The highlight is an illuminated light-and-music fountain that quickly became a new symbol of the town: fountain opening and closing festivals with evening shows were held here in spring and autumn. The square is especially beautiful in spring when the sakuras bloom. The MiG-21 aircraft monument stands on the square and the Eternal Glory memorial is nearby, making it a convenient starting point for a walk around the centre.
