A real MiG-21 fighter jet raised on a pedestal in Heroes Square in the centre of Samar is one of the town's most recognisable landmarks. It was installed in 1985 in honour of the pilots of the 295th Fighter Aviation Division, who together with the 195th and 20th Guards Rifle Divisions took part in liberating the town from the Nazi occupiers on 22 September 1943 after two years of occupation. The full-size aircraft points skyward as if taking off over the square. Next to it is a memorial sign to the 195th Rifle and 295th Air Divisions. The monument stands by a busy road junction, so it cannot be missed when entering the centre, and residents have long regarded "the Plane" as the town's calling card and a handy meeting point.
