This nine-domed wooden cathedral on Cathedral Square is Samar's greatest treasure and an architectural monument of national importance. Folk master builder Yakym Pohribniak raised it in 1775–1778 for the Zaporozhian Cossacks, and tradition holds that not a single iron nail went into the building. In 1887–1888 it was completely rebuilt to a plan by provincial architect Eduard Kharmansky, who kept its old appearance. Nine log frames and nine green domes form a dynamic pyramid more than forty metres high, and the white walls make the building look as if it were stone. In Soviet times the cathedral served as a warehouse and later housed the local history museum. It inspired Oles Honchar's novel "The Cathedral". A 19th-century bell tower and a memorial stone marking the town's 300th anniversary stand nearby.
