Samar's municipal local history museum was founded in 1960. Its first exhibition was housed in the Holy Trinity Cathedral, and since 1977 the museum has occupied the building at 4 Ukrainska Street, an early 20th-century architectural monument in the Ukrainian Art Nouveau style. In 2001 it was named after Petro Kalnyshevsky, the last Koshovyi Otaman of the Zaporozhian Sich. Its collection of more than 13,000 items traces the history of the Samara River region from ancient times to the present: Polovtsian stone idols, the Cossack era, Ukrainian everyday life, the Second World War and the town's recent history. A separate section is devoted to the Holy Trinity Cathedral. The exhibition hall regularly hosts shows by artists, decorative craftsmen and collectors, and the museum has a library of local history literature.
