Chortkiv Castle is a pentagon-shaped fortress on the left bank of the Seret river beneath Vyhnanka hill. The first wooden fortifications appeared here in the late 14th century, and in 1610 the town's owner Stanisław Hołski rebuilt it, adding a Renaissance palace with arcaded galleries inside. From 1618 the castle belonged to the Potocki family. In 1648 it was stormed by Maksym Kryvonis's Cossacks and the town militia, and it later survived Tatar and Turkish raids. Today it is part of the National Reserve Castles of Ternopil Region and the main historic landmark of Chortkiv; its walls and towers are well visible from the Seret embankment and make a great photo stop.
