Island of Love

The Island of Love is an artificial green island in the middle of the Southern Bug in central Khmelnytskyi, next to Chekman Park. It appeared during the volunteer construction of the park: from 1949 up to 15,000 townspeople spent their weekends digging a reservoir on the river by hand, and instead of hauling the excavated soil away they piled it up into an island. In April 1956 the reservoir was completely filled with water. Today the tree-covered island is mirrored in the calm water and has become one of the most romantic views in the city. In summer it can be reached by boat or pedal boat, and the best photos are taken from the embankment at sunset.
