On 16 May Zhovti Vody remembers the 1648 battle in which Bohdan Khmelnytsky's Cossack army won its first major victory over the Crown army of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The gathering takes place in Glory Park by the monumental equestrian sculpture of the heroes of the liberation war. The ceremony usually includes performances by singers from local houses of culture, a speech by the mayor, laying flowers at the monument to fallen defenders and a minute of silence. Residents come in embroidered shirts with national flags, and the 17th-century Cossack valour is consciously linked to Ukraine's present-day struggle for independence. It is a good chance to see the town's main historical symbol and feel its atmosphere.
