Dunaivtsi community presents its stonecutting heritage at the 'From Quarry to Monument' forum
The heads of the community's tourism and local history centres presented research on the old stonecutting craft of the Dunaivtsi area at a heritage forum.
On 10 September 2026, Dunaivtsi community was represented by Ihor Khytriuk, head of the Tourist and Local Lore Centre, and Alona Hridina, director of the Local History Centre, at the forum 'From Quarry to Monument: integrating intangible heritage — the stonecutting craft of Podillia — into the creative economy'.
The forum brought together researchers, museum staff and popularisers who study, preserve and interpret the cultural heritage of Podillia. Its main theme was stonecutting, a craft that provided a livelihood for Podillia villages for centuries and shaped their distinctive stone appearance.
The Dunaivtsi delegation presented the results of its own research into stonecutting in the community. They also shared their experience of how studying traditional crafts can become the basis of a grant project and how such a project can be carried through.
For travellers this work already has a practical result. In 2025 the community opened the 'Stonecutting Craft of Dunaivtsi Land' tourist route. It runs along river valleys through Ivankivtsi, Minkivtsi, Syvorohy and Prytulivka, past healing springs, stone buildings and an old water mill.
The community hopes that the new contacts made at the forum will help preserve local traditions and bring joint initiatives to promote Podillia heritage to life.
