About the community

Zhovti Vody City Hromada lies in the west of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, near the border with Kirovohrad Oblast, and unites the town of Zhovti Vody with the villages of Volochaivka, Marianivka and Sukha Balka. The name of the area is inseparable from the Battle of Zhovti Vody in 1648, the first major victory of Bohdan Khmelnytsky's army in the national liberation war. This is commemorated by the grand equestrian monument to the heroes of the liberation war in Glory Park, and every May the town honours the memory of the Cossacks. The modern town grew out of a workers' settlement founded in 1895 around iron ore mining; it received town status and its current name in 1957 (previously Zhovta Rika). Since the 1950s Zhovti Vody has been the centre of Ukraine's uranium industry thanks to the Eastern Mining and Processing Plant, so mine headframes and old quarries are a distinctive part of the townscape. Travellers will find the Yu. Pryhozhin Zhovti Vody History Museum with its Cossack exhibition and collections of clocks and minerals, the neoclassical 1957 Palace of Culture on Peace Square, the cosy Glory Park and Children's Park, the picturesque banks of the Zhovta River with its swans, and a flooded ore quarry that has become a spot for walks and photos. At the end of August the community celebrates City Day together with Miners' Day.
